VIENTIANE, June 9 – A handover ceremony was held on June 6 to mark the completion of the renovation project and reopening of the Chinese martyrs cemeteries in Muong Sai and Namo, Oudomxay province, Laos. Over 100 Chinese and Lao representatives attended the event held at the cemetery in Muong Sai.

The attendees jointly presented flower baskets to the Chinese martyrs who supported the Laos people in the 1960s and 1970s, and then unveiled the repaired cemetery.

Qian Feng, deputy minister of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, expressed gratitude in his address towards the government and people of Laos. Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong stated that the building of a China-Laos community with a shared future has been rolled out and the internationalist spirit of our revolutionary predecessors has been fully inherited and carried forward.

The representatives of Laos expressed their sincere gratitude and deep condolences to the Chinese martyrs who sacrificed their lives on Lao soil. And they also pledged to preserve and promote the revolutionary friendship between Laos and China, and to further the friendly cooperation between the two countries for development in the future.

During the fight for national independence and liberation of Laos in the 1960s and 1970s, hundreds of Chinese soldiers and civilians heroically sacrificed their lives. Currently, 215 Chinese martyrs have been laid to rest in three Chinese martyrs" cemeteries located in Muong Sai and Namo in Oudomxay, as well as Muong Bei in Xieng Khouang, Laos. In September 2016, the Chinese and Lao governments signed an agreement to fully initiate the repair project for the Chinese martyrs" cemeteries in Laos. So far, the repair project for all three cemeteries has been completed.
